He is a well-known and successful skin and skincare specialist. He owns a chain of skincare outlets all over the country.
He made headline last week.
But this time, it’s not about skincare but parenting.
The doctor just lost his 24-year old son. His son committed suicide by jumping off a building.
The reason? Love.
The son was involved in a love triangle and he volunteered to pull himself out of the messy relationship.
Unfortunately, grief took over him and he couldn’t handle his emotions well and chose to solve the problem by ending his own life.
The father shared that he is partly responsible for his only son’s death.
Here are some of the regrets he shared:
- No amount of money can buy you happiness. What is more important is spending time with family and have fun. But now it’s too late for me.
- Communicate and interact with your child on a regular basis. I was busy and hardly talked to my son and I got to know about what’s happening to his life through his friends.
- I gave everything he asked for since he was small. When he failed in his relationship, he couldn’t face the failure. My advice is don’t give everything your child asks for and let him “suffer” once in a while so that he can be tough when he’s faced with rejections in life.
I am not trying to belittle and look down on the father but all of us can learn something from this tragedy before it’s too late. It took great courage for the father to admit his mistakes in front of so many people.
Coincidentally, most of what he said is aligned with what I am teaching in the book The Nonconformist’s Guide to Parenting.
