Many of us plan to have children in our lifetime, some of us plan that time and others of us find the opportunity is presented for us. How do you know when you are ready to become a parent? Some of us are definitely more ready than others! I find it amazing that we go through life having to be trained in everything from our job to driving a vehicle, yet anyone can have a baby without any preparation at all! However, becoming a parent and having what it takes to be a good parent are two entirely different issues.
Are You Ready?
You are going to have to ask yourself some tough questions if you are considering becoming a parent. Having a baby is a huge responsibility. It will definitely affect every aspect of your life, every day of your life. Taking care of yourself during pregnancy is an essential part of taking responsibility for your baby. Eating properly and getting exercise is very important. Your meals should include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Drink plenty of milk for calcium and plenty of water to stay hydrated.
You should see a doctor for prenatal care as soon as you suspect you may be pregnant. For dad’s, you need to help take care of the mother as well as learn all you can about pregnancy and taking care of a newborn. The more involved a father is in the pregnancy and birth, the more likely the family is to stay together.
Financial Capacity?
The amount of money you have has nothing to do with being ready to be a parent. Sure, it makes the prospect of supplying the items your baby needs easier, but being a good parent takes more than money. A good parent is responsible and puts their child’s needs first. They are also loving and patient. If you want the world to revolve around your needs, then you aren’t ready to be a parent.
It is a good idea to wait to become a parent until you have found steady employment and have a stable home to live in. You should also be in a healthy, loving relationship with your partner. Having a good support system is helpful too because having a baby will change your life. If you aren’t able to take care of yourself, how do you expect to take care of a baby properly?
It’s Your Call…
Asking yourself about your lifestyle and what you have to offer to a relationship and to a child are very important. If you don’t like the answers you get, then it may not be the best time to have a child. Some people are ready to be parents at 20 and others aren’t’ ready until 30. If you don’t want to have children, don’t let society pressure you. The best gift you can give any child is being a parent who sincerely is ready for the job.
